Early Treatment

At What Age Should a Child Have an Orthodontic Examination?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that most children should undergo an orthodontic screening by the age of 7. This early examination enables orthodontists to assess the need for treatment and determine the best time to start. Dr. Laurie’s ideal time for an initial evaluation is around the time of eruption of the adult upper incisors (front teeth).

Why Evaluate Children at Such an Early Age?

Early diagnosis and treatment can guide emerging teeth into better positions, preserve space for permanent teeth, and reduce the risk of fractures from protruding front teeth.

Benefits of Early Treatment

  • Orthodontists can guide jaw growth and the eruption of permanent teeth.
  • Early intervention can regulate the width of dental arches, create space for permanent teeth, and prevent the need for extractions.
  • It reduces the likelihood of impacted teeth, corrects habits like thumb sucking, and addresses abnormal swallowing or speech, simplifying future treatments.

Does Early Treatment Benefit All Children?

Not all children need early orthodontic treatment. Some orthodontic issues are best addressed during the teenage years when all permanent teeth, except wisdom teeth, have grown in. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s specific needs, and those who are not yet ready for immediate treatment are enrolled in our orthodontic recall program.

What is an Orthodontic Recall Program?

Our recall program monitors the eruption of permanent teeth, allowing timely interventions such as early removal of baby teeth to correct poor eruption patterns. Regular visits every 6-12 months help us track progress without additional fees, ensuring the best time to initiate treatment for optimal results.

Other Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

In addition to enhancing smiles, braces improve bite function, facilitate better oral hygiene, prevent tooth wear, and promote lifelong dental health.

Early Treatment and Adolescent Braces

Early intervention addresses significant issues, prevents more severe problems, and simplifies future treatments. Final alignment adjustments typically occur during a shortened Phase II braces treatment in the teen years after all permanent teeth have erupted.

Importance of Regular Dental Visits

Patients with braces require extra care to maintain oral health. Regular check-ups and cleanings with your family dentist every 6 months ensure clean teeth and healthy gums throughout orthodontic treatment.
